MTV Movie & TV Awards

The MTV Movie Awards were started in 1992 as the first really different take on film awards. This was evident right down to the unique prize awarded to winners – a popcorn bucket shaped trophy full of gold-plated metal popcorn.

The show came to life at a time when film award winners were chosen exclusively by industry insiders and elite panels. MTV’s solution to this disconnected approach was to leave voting in the hands of the general public, who could choose the actors and films they liked best – no matter the reasoning. The show became a success because it gave the public a more genuine investment in the outcome.

The New York based awards firm Society Awards creates these trophies and has ever since handling the first redesign in 2009. Another significant – and unexpected – design upgrade was implemented in 2017 when the show was rebranded as the MTV Movie & TV Awards. For this new format, the trophy for 2017 included a cup made out of machined acrylic. The effect is that of a red party cup. The new logo for the show appears on the cup in glitter gold. We think the combination of red, gold and black makes for a stunning and elegant custom award.

The show is a refreshing addition to awards season because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Each year the program’s organizers outdo themselves with big-time celebrity hosts and huge, perfectly executed music and theatrical performances. It is a very popular and worthwhile event to attend if given the opportunity!
