VH1 Hip Hop Honors

Started in 2004, the VH1 Hip Hop Honors are different from any other show in the segment because of how winners are chosen. Instead of choosing nominees based solely on metrics of commercial success such as record sales, number ones or popularity, the show recognizes those with the greatest influence and significance in hip hop history.

Despite the show’s unique viewpoint and fanatical viewers, the Hip Hop Honors experienced a hiatus after the 2010 show. This hiatus was ended when the show returned in spectacular fashion in 2016. On July 11, 2016 a very special edition of the VH1 HHH honored the women of hip hop, including: Missy Elliot, Salt-N-Pepa, Eve, Lil’ Kim and Queen Latifah. Performances included live renditions of the honorees’ songs by top artists.

To honor these iconic artists of hip hop, VH1 commissioned a stunning custom award. The trophy is a work of modern art in its own right. The words “HIP” and “HOP” are make up the central column in perpendicularly intersecting extrusions. The trophy is crafted entirely of solid, pure aluminum. The aluminum is polished to a mirror finish on the base and the word “HIP,” with 24k gold electroplating applied on the word “HOP” for a two-tone effect.

The 2016 program was a clear signal that this format has a place in the crowded arena of music awards shows.
